Current transformers (BI, CT, TI) or current transformers are electrical devices used to convert high-value and high-voltage currents to currents with standard values of 5A or 1A, safe voltage providing for measurement, control and protection circuits.
The main working mode of the current transformer is the short circuit mode (the secondary winding is always connected to an ammeter or extremely small impedance). In the open-circuit secondary winding field, the entire primary current is responsible for magnetizing the steel core, the inductance Bm increases suddenly, causing saturation of the magnetic circuit. When the primary current passes zero, the induced emf in the secondary coil of the current transformer will have a sharp peak with a very large amplitude. The voltage on the two ends of the open-circuit secondary winding will increase very high, causing damage to equipment and danger to people.
To further understand and clarify the danger of secondary open circuit during equipment operation and to improve knowledge for employees. ACEE’s Technical Department organized an experiment to measure voltage on the secondary winding of current transformers when open circuit for two types of current transformers 35kV with the ratio 200-400-600/1 A and 24kV billion current transformers. number 1000-1500-2500/1 A at the Company’s Laboratory.
Through the above test, the staff of the ACEE Technical Department has summarized and made the following assessment and lessons learned:
– For current transformers with larger current-transform ratio, the secondary winding open-circuit voltage is larger with the same primary current value.
– With the same primary current value, the open-circuit voltage on the protective coil will be much larger than that of the measuring coil.
– The primary current value only needs to reach 50% of the rated current for the measuring coil or 25-30% of the rated current for the protective coil, the peak voltage on the secondary winding has reached 4 ,5kV.
– When the secondary winding is open-circuited for current transformers with a large ratio like 2500/1 at the primary current value equal to the rated current, it will be extremely dangerous, there is a discharge between the two ends of the secondary winding or discharge with the current transformer case and cause the current transformer to be damaged.

Partial discharge is the partial breakdown of the dielectric of a small part in a system of solid and liquid insulation under the influence of high voltage.

Partial discharges result from internal discharges due to the formation of holes in insulation, air bubbles, and voids between the dielectric and the semiconductor. A discharge that creates a path along a gap between two components, or a discharge from the growth of an electric or water tree. When the electric field strength inside the holes or cracks reaches a threshold value, the gaseous form is generated by ionizing the defect, the free electrons generated by the initial collisions continuously, will gradually lead to breakdown or discharge through holes, defects in insulation.

Early detection of partial discharges inside insulating materials of electrical equipment such as transformers, power cables, generators, medium voltage cabinets… before being put into use and operation for the purpose of ensuring safety and reliability in the power system.

For 24kV or 35kV medium voltage cabinets, the measurement and evaluation of partial discharges are carried out according to the guidelines of IEC 60270:2015 and IEC 62271-200:2021.

In the last days of November, A Chau Electric Energy Joint Stock Company (ACEE) cooperated with ABB Automation and Electrification (Vietnam) Corporation Ltd – Bac Ninh Branch to perform partial discharge testing for batches of 24kV medium voltage cabinets before being shipped at the switchboard factory of this area. This is one of the very important tasks for in-depth evaluation and diagnosis of insulation faults of equipment that cannot be seen by the naked eye before being shipped, requiring strict requirements for accuracy and meticulousness and practical experience in the implementation process.

ACEE testers are connecting the partial discharge measurement diagram for 24kV medium voltage cabinets at the switchboard factory of ABB Automation and Electrification (Vietnam) Corporation Ltd Bac Ninh branch.

The performance of partial discharge diagnostic measurement for many objects such as: generators of thermal power plants, 110kV and 220kV power cables as well as 24kV, 35kV medium voltage cabinets… ACEE’s technical suite is very experienced. Therefore, with this project, ACEE has successfully completed the partial discharge measurement before shipment for the above batch of 24kV medium voltage cabinets and received high appreciation for its capacity, reputation and professionalism.

In many experimental items performed, the test item for testing the temperature rise limit is a typical test item for switchgear and low-voltage control for switchgear and low-voltage control is for the purpose of checking that the temperature of components, equipment, busbars does not exceed the allowable temperature rise limit as prescribed when working with the rated current value.

This can be said to be an important test carried out to ensure low-voltage switchgear and control cabinets to detect early heat-related defects during operation for components, equipment, busbars, connections… and to provide a quality switchboard product to customers and partners, improving the stable and long-term operation of the switchboard.

Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) is a process of evaluating equipment during and after assembly to confirm that the device is built and operates in accordance with design specifications. Any deviations or other irregularities discovered during ex-factory testing will be corrected and rectified prior to shipment to the site.

ACEE engineers are testing the internal circuitry and installing relays to protect the medium voltage cabinet.
